Prevent Costly Pool Mistakes
Pools are expensive to install, and homeowners will want to avoid unnecessary repair expenses. Pool owners can perform several simple tasks between professional service calls to prevent expensive repairs.
Maintain a consistent water level in the pool
Pools need a certain amount of water to allow the systems to work correctly. When the water level is low, the pumps suck the skimmers dry, introducing air into the system. The air breaks the pump suction, which causes the circulation to stop.
Without water circulation, the pool water does not receive chlorine and turns green quickly. A lack of water circulation will also quickly burn up a pump as it needs water to cool the seal.
Keep the skimmer baskets clean
After a big storm or in the fall when trees drop leaves, the skimmers quickly become plugged up tight with debris. Too often, pool owners forget to clean the baskets. Clogged baskets impede free water circulation and cause the flow to eventually stop altogether, burning up the pump quickly and creating a green pool situation.
Repair a leaking pump
A leaking pump is of concern because it results in high water bills. Even worse is a burned-up pump. The seals in a typical pump are usually good for three years under regular use. After that, the pool owner will have to replace them.
Replacing pump seals is a challenging job, but it is one that the pool technician can do when they come for pre-season service. Replacing the seals can keep the pump running optimally and avoid an expensive pump replacement due to neglect of a leaking shaft seal.
Put away pool toys after swimming
Leaving pool toys in a pool after swimming is something many do. The family and their friends swim for several hours, then jump for lunch, leaving the various pool toys in the pool.
Smaller toys can be sucked into the skimmers, causing erratic flow to the pump. In cases where the skimmer basket is missing, smaller toys can be sucked into the underground piping, causing a costly replacement as the pipe has to be dug up and reburied.
An inexpensive toy storage bin keeps the floats from blowing into the neighbor’s yard.
Minimize a dog’s time in the pool
Dogs offer unconditional love and companionship, but their fur clogs up a pool’s filter. Limiting their pool time is best so that the filters and valves can manage the fur.
These simple tasks can make a difference in the time and expense of pool ownership. Contact a local pool company for help and maintenance services when unsure of best practices.
