Tips to Keeping a Pool Inviting Between Weekly Maintenance

Letting debris build up in the pool will result in full baskets or bags, increased phosphates from organic material, and staining of the pool plaster.

A pool is supposed to be a fun place to hang out or kick back and relax; a dirty pool takes away from that. Here are three simple tips for keeping a pool beautiful between professional pool care visits.

Empty the baskets

If there is lots of vegetation around the pool, check and empty the baskets. Most pools have skimmers, each with a basket in them. The circulation pump will also have a basket in it. The skimmer baskets collect all of the leaves and debris on the pool surface before it saturates and sinks to the bottom of the pool. Too much debris collecting in the baskets will result in poor water flow. When the water flow slows down, there won’t be as much movement on the pool’s surface to push debris into the skimmers.

The circulation pump also has a basket that serves as a backup to the skimmer basket. Any debris that slips past the skimmer baskets will collect in this pump basket to prevent larger debris from going into the pump and clogging the pump impeller. A clogged impeller can cause the motor seal or pump motor to fail.

The skimmer and pump baskets should be clean and in good repair. Check for things such as any cracks that debris could be slipping through. Also, ensure the basket does not float when the system turns off and allow debris to pass by. Several brands and types of skimmer baskets come with different handles; some even have a built-in weight to prevent them from floating.

Use a net to remove debris

Net out any excess debris in the pool. Letting debris build up in the pool will result in full baskets or bags, increased phosphates from organic material, and staining of the pool plaster.

Employ a professional pool service technician to balance pool chemicals

Don’t try to balance the water chemistry. A professional pool technician should eliminate the need for a pool owner to add chemicals. Now, it is reasonable that a pool owner adds some shock after a pool party. However, pool owners can complicate a pool technician’s job when adding algaecides, acids, and pH adjustments.

Many pool owners pay for professional pool services and may wonder why they need to clean their pool if they pay for a service. These cleaning tips will minimize the work the professional must do, reducing a pool owner’s cost and making the pool more enjoyable between professional cleaning services. The pool technician can spend their time on chemical testing and balancing, brushing the plaster, and performing a thorough equipment check rather than spending the entire time chasing leaves and pulling lawn chairs from last weekend’s BBQ out of the bottom of the pool. In some cases, it can contribute to keeping the weekly cleaning rate down.

These tasks will significantly improve a pool’s overall look and encourage its use. The equipment will run smoother, the plaster will last longer, and the technician can focus on the more difficult tasks of pool ownership so the pool owner doesn’t have to.
